Event Details

For thousands of years the native people of California tended the oak forests. Nowadays, trees and soils are undergoing a profound ecological shift brought on by changes in land management practices and fire regimes, leading to severe forest decline in many parts of California. Fortunately, by studying the traditional native practices, which involved burning as well as fertilizing with midden materials, we are guided to an effective means of improving the health of our oaks without the use of synthetic chemicals.

This six-hour workshop will cover the science, materials, methods, and results of oak restoration studies, and will involve a hands-on demonstration of fire mimicry techniques that are shown to be improving the health of oaks.

Doctor Lee Klinger is an independent scientist living in Big Sur, California. Since 2005, he has served as the director of Sudden Oak Life, a movement aimed at using traditional, ecologically based techniques to address the problem of oak mortality. Dr. Klinger has over 30 years of academic experience in the environmental sciences, and has held scholarly appointments at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the University of Colorado, the University of Oxford, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
